Our Goals

Afro-Indigenous Led Space.

Black stewarded Land.

Land Back.

Current Goals

Sankofa's current goal is to cultivate a culture of curiosity and skill development among its members, embracing a "learn as we go" approach. This involves hands-on learning through farming on our two current plots, Loyola and Senneville, where we aim to complete three full growing and harvesting cycles. We are committed to securing funding to fairly compensate members for their learning and labor, while strengthening our community by fostering connections with Montreal’s Afro-Indigenous community, local Indigenous groups, and other BIPOC farming allies. Through workshops, trainings, and collaborations, we prioritize growth both on and off the land.

Short Term Goals

Sankofa's medium-term goals focus on laying the foundation for long-term sustainability and autonomy. Over the next five years, we aim to raise $30,000 through our fundraising campaign to make a down payment on our own plot of land, prioritizing funds redistributed through mutual aid to align with our belief in land access rights rooted in Black liberation and restorative justice. By this stage, we envision becoming more knowledgeable and skilled in farming, confidently engaging in both teaching and learning. Additionally, we hope to establish consistent, annual programming that reflects our mission and becomes a hallmark of our work within the community.

Long Term Goals

Sankofa's long-term goals center on achieving self-sufficiency and deepening our roots both locally and globally. We aim to raise sufficient funds to own a plot of land with a farmhouse, creating a permanent home for our cooperative. By this stage, we aspire to compensate members fairly for their work on the land and sustain our operations independently. Additionally, we envision establishing meaningful ties to land on the African continent, reconnecting with ancestral roots and fostering transcontinental solidarity in alignment with our values and mission.
