Sankofa Workshops

An important part of the work we do is increasing access to Afro - Indigenous  knowledge. A part of Sankofa’s mission is to go fetch and reclaim. We believe that all ancestral knowledge is already known, it’s a matter of remembering. We share the wisdom of our ancestors through digestable, accessible workshops, that also allow us to remephasize the importance of Afro-agriculture and recognizing Africans as Indigeous knowledge keepers.

Tea Blend Workshops

At Sankofa Farming Cooperative, we facilitate engaging workshops that explore the basic properties of various flowers and herbs, focusing on the benefits their diverse combinations can provide for mental, physical, and spiritual health from an Afro-Indigenous perspective.

Throughout the session, participants learn about the traditional uses of these plants, gaining insight into their healing properties and cultural significance. Participants are encouraged to connect with the offerings of the earth, drawing upon their instincts and personal experiences to create their own unique tea blends.

This hands-on approach serves as an accessible introduction to herbalism, allowing individuals to explore the art of blending herbs while fostering a deeper appreciation for nature's gifts. By the end of the workshop, participants leave with their bespoke tea mixtures, equipped with knowledge and confidence to continue their herbal journey.

Decolonizing our Plates

Interwoven within our mission is the thread that connects decolonization work, food systems, and farming. "Decolonizing Our Plates" serves as a pivotal approach to radicalising the conversation on food systems. This initiative invites the wider community to critically examine where our food comes from, what it consists of, and the role it plays in the broader context of decolonization.

The act of decolonizing our plates extends beyond merely changing what we eat; it challenges the underlying structures that dictate food production, distribution, and consumption. This process encourages individuals to confront historical injustices associated with land use, resource extraction, and agricultural practices. By recognising and addressing these issues, we can take meaningful steps towards a more equitable food system.

Our approach emphasises the importance of sourcing food that aligns with principles of sustainability, community empowerment, and cultural relevance. Emphasising local and Indigenous food systems allows us to create a framework that respects traditional knowledge and practices. This connection to land and identity fosters a deeper understanding of how our choices in food sourcing impact not only our health but also the health of our communities and ecosystems.

Through workshops, "Decolonizing Our Plates" aims to engage individuals in re-evaluating their relationship with food. By fostering awareness and encouraging intentionality in our food choices, we can collectively work towards dismantling the colonial frameworks that have historically shaped our agricultural systems. In doing so, we pave the way for a more just and inclusive food future.
