Volunteer Days!
Volunteer Days are an essential part of Sankofa’s landwork and community practice, rooted in collective care and dedicated to hands-on labor. While these days foster community connection, their primary purpose is to support Sankofa’s land stewardship through tasks like weeding, prepping, harvesting, hauling, and pruning.
Sankofa operates two unique plots to sustain our agricultural initiatives. Our Loyola plot, located behind Concordia University’s Loyola campus in Montreal, connects us with the local academic community and promotes urban farming practices for Afro-Indigenous communities. Our second plot, just under 1.5 acres, is located on the lands of Les Jardins Carya in Senneville, around 45 minutes from the city, where we cultivate a wide range of crops in a more rural setting.
Volunteering at either plot begins with a spiritual opening circle to set our intentions, followed by a communal lunch to nourish and connect. We end each day with a gratitude offering to the land, honoring its vital role in our lives and community.
We welcome all bodies, all genders, and all levels of farming experience to join us in this enriching, hands-on experience. Our volunteer days offer first and foremost, Afro-Indigenous peoples a unique opportunity to build community and actively participate in the ecology we’re creating.
Loyola Days
Our humble Loyola plot is nestled behind our farmhouse at the back of Concordia University’s Loyola Campus, where we share the land with other Concordia garden groups. It’s a vibrant, communal space where our members can often be found throughout the week.
We host official volunteer days :
every other Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM*
*specifically for Afro-Indigenous Black individuals.
every other Wednesday, we welcome members of the broader Global South community from 10 AM to 3 PM
Can’t make it to our scheduled volunteer days? No worries! Feel free to email us at volunteering@sankofafarming.com or drop by between Monday and Saturday—you might just catch one of us tending to the land!
Senneville Days
Our Senneville plot, located about 45 minutes from the city, hosts monthly volunteer days due to the distance.
On the last Sunday of every month,:
Departure:
The Loyola farmhouse at 9:30 AM and return at 4 PM—these are full-day commitments as we’re far from the city!
To accommodate everyone, we often need 1-2 volunteer drivers to help transport community members. If you have a vehicle and would like to support our Senneville volunteer days, please reach out to volunteering@sankofafarming.com.
For those interested in getting involved more frequently, we offer additional volunteer opportunities every Tuesday and Friday from 9:30 AM to 2 PM. As space is limited to three people per trip, please email us to reserve your spot.
